Zombies make marvelous antagonists. They’re plodding, dark parodies of society’s short-sightedness. They’re plentiful and emotionless eaters of flesh, which makes them perfect cannon fodder for action films and twitch shooters. Their wasted visages serve the purposes of both horror and humor with equal effectiveness. They’ve been a part of the video game landscape for decades, so long they’ve carved out their own subgenre: the “zombie game.”

These are the 25 best zombie games of all time.

Zombie games have been around for a while, and when discussing some of the genre’s best, video game remakes of the classics are among the best. The list features multiple remakes including Resident Evil 2 Remake as well as the recently released Dead Space Remake. Video game remakes like these have taken these classics and polished them for a more modern audience with better graphics and updated controls.

But just because a game hasn’t been remade doesn’t mean it doesn’t make the list. While we’re excited for the Resident Evil 4 remake, it doesn’t mean that the absolute classic Resident Evil 4 hasn’t been included on the list.

Our list doesn’t only include Resident Evil games (which, we forgot to admit Resident Evil Village (a.k.a Resident Evil 8) is also on the list). Our list spans three decades of video games and includes all genres. Our list features mobile-first games like Plants vs. Zombies, narrative-driven games like Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead Season 1, RTS games like They Are Billions, and console exclusives like the PS4’s Days Gone.

And if you’re wondering if we’ve included games like The Last of Us and Call of Duty… Of course we did. Both The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us 2 are on the list—but where? You’ll have to watch to find out.
